Looking after Sheesham furniture

Dust, water, sun and polish — what the Sikar workshop tells customers after delivery.

Dust, not a wet mop

A dry cotton cloth is enough for everyday dust. If a mark needs more, barely dampen the cloth and dry the surface straight after. Do not run a wet mop under a bed or along a dining plinth. Standing water lifts lacquer at the joints first.

Coasters under glasses. A hot thali straight off the stove will ring a dining top. Felt pads under lamps and décor stop grit from scratching the finish when you slide them.

Sun and moisture

Afternoon sun through a west window fades lacquer and opens small checks in the grain. Sheer curtains are enough. Do not park a bed against a wall that sweats in monsoon, and keep the back of a TV unit a finger off a damp wall so air can move.

Rajasthan is dry for most of the year and humid in the rains. A little movement in solid wood is normal. A crack that opens after a leak is not — photograph it and message us the same week.

Polish, markers, and what to skip

Do not drown the piece in furniture polish every week. A thin wax once or twice a year, rubbed off, is plenty if the lacquer looks dull. Silicone sprays build a film that is hard to refinish later.

A matching wax filler or a furniture marker hides a small knock. Deep chips should come back to the workshop or be done by someone who works solid wood, not a spray-paint match from a hardware shop.

Moving it

Lift a bed or sofa. Dragging it on tile snaps a leg and grinds the finish. Empty drawers before a house move. Hydraulic beds should be strapped shut so the base does not open in the truck.

On delivery, open the carton with the transporter present and note damage on the slip. We cannot argue a crush a week later with no note.

If you are moving house within the first year, tell us the new city before the truck is booked. Some pieces are easier to move assembled; tall storage often has to come apart. We will say which, rather than leave it to the packers.
